I know it's a little bit later than usual, but here's the next weekly update on our ongoing Snake game project.
Focusing the Grid
My biggest contribution this week was that I updated the Grid shader that the player moves over to be smaller and more localized around the front of the Snake, as if it was a spotlight.
This new version of the Grid only appears in the immediate vicinity of where the player is, meaning that there will no longer be instances where whole rooms become covered with the Grid if the Snake happens to move close enough to it.
More Fiery Fire
Another notable task we did this week was adding a Fire visual effect to the Fire blocks so that it's more obvious that they are actually Fire.
It is important to note that this will not be the final version of the Fire. This is more of a placeholder to prevent confusion until we can get actual art for the Fires in.
Other Updates
Here are some of the other important updates to our game from the past week:
A major persistent bug was (hopefully) finally hunted down and removed
Menus can now be navigated using keyboard and joystick controls
VFX and SFX have been added for a number of player actions
More music has been added into the game
Level 2 continues to be in development
Future mechanics continue to be refined
Art models are getting animated and being prepared to be put into the game
Playable Demo
A new testable build of our game is now available for testing. Version 0.32 can be found here. Only a Windows build is available at the moment, but we can try to support other platforms upon request.
The game itself can be played by running the "Grid Glitch.exe" application. The "README.txt" file contains basic instructions on how to play the game.
More details about playtesting and providing feedback can be found at the bottom of this post.
We're on break this week, so there probably won't be a weekly update this coming weekend. After that, though, it'll be time for us to have our game in an Alpha state, so stay tuned for that.
Burn baby burn!
