"The Robot Split in Time" at GDC

Last week, our moment of triumph finally arrived. Alongside two other members of our team, I got the honor of showcasing our game The Robot Split in Time at Intel's University Game Showcase at GDC 2019 in San Francisco. Now that I've had some time to catch up and recover from the trip, I'd like to share some of the highlights from the trip.

First, here's a picture of GDC itself. At least, the outside of the Moscone Center where it was being held. Unfortunately, we didn't get the chance to actually look inside, but I heard it was amazing. Still, it was really cool to be there in person and experience all of the surrounding activities.

That first picture was taken on our first night in San Francisco as we were walking to a dinner with other MSU Game Dev alumni. I know a great picture of everyone at the dinner exists, but I don't have access to it. I'll make sure to update if I ever do.

The second day of our trip was the main event itself: Intel's University Games Showcase. Here's a pic of the event in City View at Metreon. Things were still getting set up at this time, but it got a lot busier as the day went on.

And, of course, here's our table set up and ready to go. You can see that we plastered our poster from here everywhere. We also have our real-life model of C.A.R.L.'s head sitting in the middle of the table. He was very popular.

Overall, feedback seemed to be generally positive about our game. Most people seemed to have a lot of fun playing through our demo, even if they struggled with some of the puzzles. The in-game victory fist bump was particularly well received with a combination of surprise and joy.

Alas, our game was not chosen by the judges as one of the five to move on to the next round, but that's alright. It was still an amazing experience to be a part of and I'm grateful I just go to be there.

Although the main event of the trip was over, there was still some time left on our trip to have some fun, including taking a tour of Twitch's headquarters, doing a local bar crawl, and heading down to Fisherman's Wharf to see the sea lions.

Least favorite part of the trip: Running across Detroit Metro Airport in 3 minutes carrying several heavy bags.
