Learning Unreal: Materials

Updated: Aug 13, 2019

Today, I'm continuing my series where I share my experiences learning the Unreal Game Engine. This time, I learnt how Materials work and how they are used in Unreal. As it has been for the rest of the series, I followed this tutorial series when working on this part.

Bananas with Materials
This is gonna be a unique fruit salad.

This probably isn't the first thing you noticed, but the Material for the yellow bananas are actually brighter than they were in past posts, which is something that I achieved by editing the banana Material to be brighter using the Material Blueprint editor.

The green and purple banana Materials are actually Material Instances of the original yellow banana Material, which allows them to be variations on the same underlying base Material.

The player cube also now has a dynamically-changing Material which starts off white and slowly grows redder as the player collects more bananas.

Red bananas (which have purplish skin) are actually a Central American delicacy.
